To Fundamentalists, the Bible means what they -say- it means, just like the Constitution. God works for them, not vice-versa (for instance Bush believes God put him in the Whie House, and I have personally spoken to a number of other fundies who actually believe that!) When they can't find support for their ideas in the NT they will dip into the OT, but they read the OT very selectively.

Because they're not being guided by the Bible, instead they're coming up with their own ideas and using the Bible to support them.
