Hello,
I'm 43 and have always thought of myself as a fiscal conservative, social moderate. In the 80's I found it easy to identify myself best with the Republican Party. I now wonder if perhaps I wasn't a bit naive.
Starting in the 90's it seemed the party was moving into areas that pushed the limits of my social moderation. More & more emphasis on religion, limits of personal freedoms, corporate influence, and a general sense of "Good ol' boy" political shenanigans. I cannot say that I trust any individual of the GOP more than I would any Democrat.
If you go to the RNC website (http://www.gop.com/about/imarepublicanbecause.htm) it lists the supposed pricipals of the party and in general I couldn't agree more with them. But I no longer believe those principals guide the party.
I know that I could never consider myself a "Democrat" for I cannot abide by the lack of self responsibilty & the ever increasing social programs designed to increase the goverments role in private society. But I cannot watch / listen to the members of the GOP today and say that I am a part of them.
The past 8 years have taught me what I dislike most about our two party system. Both parties find it more important to win than to do what's right for our country. Frauds & crackpots such as Limbaugh, Hannity, and Beck who act as though they speak for the citizens who support the GOP only add to my resentment of it. I no longer consider myself attached to the Republican party.
If there were ever a time when this country needed a 3rd party it is now. If I get the slightest sign that a legitimate 3rd party were being formed I would not hesitate to assist in it's formation.
Regards,
