Looking at the map of the ancient Persian Empire you can see that the ancient predecessor of Iran - the Pre-Muslim empire of Paras used to control all the Arab world of today from Egypt to Pakistan.
In the limited version of the Iran’s risk - the moment the US army withdraws from Iraq - Iran would go in. After all the work we did on the Iraqi’s army it doesn’t stand a chance of stopping an Iranian invasion.

Pretty clearly Iran wants the US out of Iraq. And to my mind the reason is that the US is the only thing standing in the way of Iran subsuming Iraq and basically having a sphere continuous of influence that would include Iran, Iraq, Syria, and Lebanon.
Even if you don’t give Ahmadinejad the credit that he can arrange a huge area as a sphere of Iran’s influence one should give him the credit that he tries. No amount of negotiation would prevent Iran from being the leading force in the Arab world if we give her Iraq on a silver plate.
