Good ideas come from anywhere..

I have found myself completely disillusioned with the current political enviroment. I cannot fathom more years, decades, let alone centuries of this malaise we call a system.
I doubt that many fervent Republicans will accept my source for what I thought were exceptional points made during a recent speech. But I do not adhere to the idea that every Democrat that ever spoke only filled the air with empty syllables. Here's the points he made that I wish all candidates and their supporters could rally around (I may not accept several of Obama's proposed policies but I must say the guy is unbelievable eloquent):
1. "Our government should work for us, not against us. It should help us, not hurt us. It should ensure opportunity not just for those with the most money and influence, but for every American who's willing to work.
2. America, now is not the time for small plans.
3. But what I will not do is suggest that the senator takes his positions for political purposes. Because one of the things that we have to change in our politics is the idea that people cannot disagree without challenging each other's character and patriotism.
The times are too serious, the stakes are too high for this same partisan playbook. So let us agree that patriotism has no party. I love this country, and so do you, and so does John McCain. The men and women who serve in our battlefields may be Democrats and Republicans and independents, but they have fought together and bled together and some died together under the same proud flag. They have not served a red America or a blue America – they have served the United States of America.
4. This too is part of America's promise — the promise of a democracy where we can find the strength and grace to bridge divides and unite in common effort.
5. They claim that our insistence on something larger, something firmer and more honest in our public life is just a Trojan horse for higher taxes and the abandonment of traditional values. And that's to be expected. Because if you don't have any fresh ideas, then you use stale tactics to scare the voters. If you don't have a record to run on, then you paint your opponent as someone people should run from.
You make a big election about small things.
And you know what — it's worked before. Because it feeds into the cynicism we all have about government. When Washington doesn't work, all its promises seem empty. If your hopes have been dashed again and again, then it's best to stop hoping, and settle for what you already know."

I cannot see how anyone, from any affiliation, can say that the ideals and statements above are not worthy ones. I cannot abide any longer to listen to those who reduce the character of others in an attempt to strengthen their own positions. I do not want to hear another argument from a Republican that begins with something analogous to " Did you hear how stupid a Democrat is..". This is why pundits like Beck, Limbaugh, FOX News, etc.. come across more as raving idiots than sensible commentators. The fact that they have any audiance is more of a political blow to me than if a Democrat were to win some important election. It indicates that the party I once identified with has become a group of lowest common denominators whose entire purpose has become to win at all costs than to be right.
What will it take for this once proud party to realize that to continue along it's current path is to travel to a destination of nothing. There is no grand vision that I can hear in our message. There is no path being laid. There is no beacon on a hill. There is only finger pointing, name calling, and feigned "shock" at the picture the Democrats are painting. Well if we have no picture to hang ourselves then who will want to look at our exhibit?

Gee, I thought I was just ranting a bit.
I'm fine if you wish to post this somewhere else. While I prefer to remain unknown I get mad at others who are willing to make grandiose statements through the anonymity of the internet. Please select as little as possible from the following:
I'm Brian Hoff of Grand Rapids, Michigan. I'm 44, married for 23 years to someone with more common sense than I could ever accumulate in a lifetime. I have two terrific daughters (20 & 18)who have taught me on a few occasions that not all of my right leaning ways apply to every situation. I did not complete my engineering degree (3 of 4 years). When I make a list of what I believe in I wonder why I'm not a Democrat and yet I cannot help but be drawn to the values as listed on the RNC website (the ones that I feel are no longer a part of the Republican platform). That seem like enough? Just one favor before you post this somewhere with an audience greater than 5? Could you fix some of the typos I let by? Too many people discredit a point because of poor typing skills. If I'm discredited I'd like it to be about something that matter. -thank you - BH.
