Lawmakers: Funding could end Amtrak
WASHINGTON (AP) -
Some congressional lawmakers are warning that Amtrak, the financially struggling national passenger railroad, could go out of business next year.
They said that's if Congress goes along with a $900 million funding level supported by the Bush administration.
The comments came Tuesday as the House of Representatives began debate on an $89.9 billion bill to fund Transportation and Treasury Department programs in the coming budget year.
In Maine, Amtrak operates the Downeaster passenger train that runs from Portland to Boston with stops in Old Orchard Beach, Saco and Wells.
A Senate subcommittee has approved $1.2 billion for Amtrak, far short of the $1.8 billion Amtrak officials say is needed to keep the railway
