Democrats Fight to Maintain Control
Governor Schwarzenegger of California has managed to get on the November ballot a proposal which would take away redistricting power from the legislature and place it in the hands of a panel of retired judges. The reason for this is that legislatures, as much as they possibly can, draw districts in a manner designed to protect current officeholders from the wrath of the voters. Democrats and Republicans are both guilty of this, though with the Democrats having been in power for most of the past 60 years, they are by far the greater offenders.
Because the Democrats won so big in the 2000 elections in California, they were able to draw the districts to their heart's content...and this has led to an immovable Democratic majority in both the California legislature and in the California Congressional delegation. And our Democrats are not going to give up this power without a fight:
SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) - Three civil rights groups and two legislative committees have jumped into a fight over Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger's attempt to change the way legislative and congressional districts are drawn in California. The Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund, the William C. Velasquez Institute and the Congress on Racial Equality Legal Defense Fund filed lawsuits Wednesday challenging the placement of Schwarzenegger's proposal on the Nov. 8 special election ballot.
It is all too typical of the Democrats that they are greatly afraid of democracy - what we have here is the spectacle of the Democratic Party not trying to win at the ballot box but of trying to prevent any ballots from even being cast. You'd think that if they had a real case against the Governor's plan, they'd fight it out in November and let the people decide...but they know they don't have a case, and thus are trying to pre-emptively strike against the will of the people.
I'd like to have a Democrat - seriously - come on here and tell me why they feel that a lawsuit is superior to an election.

lmao - so, it's due to the way districts are drawn, not the fact that californians by and large are not republicans, hey?
you're so transparent, it should be a crime.

Are you saying the panel of retired judges will be elected? I don't see one word here on where they come from.

Gosh, repugs would never do that, like when they did that in Texas just recently.
